2026-27 Season Basics

• Opening: Friday, August 21, 2026 — GW1 deadline
• Ending: May 2027 (planned) — 38 GWs total
• Official game: fantasy.premierleague.com

Due to the later timing of World Cup 2026, the Premier League season starts slightly later than usual. FPL's game has already launched in late July — squad building and chip selection are live.

Promoted Clubs

The three clubs promoted from the 2025-26 EFL Championship:

• Coventry City (COV) — Automatic promotion as Championship champions. Watch out for Wright (~£5.0m) among budget mids. GW1 vs Arsenal is tough
• Ipswich Town (IPS) — Automatic promotion in 2nd. Bouncing straight back after their 24-25 EPL stint
• Hull City (HUL) — Playoff final winner over Middlesbrough 1-0 (Oli McBurnie). First Premier League appearance in 25 years

Relegated Clubs

• West Ham United (18th) — Ended a 14-season run in the Premier League
• Burnley (19th)
• Wolverhampton Wanderers (20th) — Bottom-placed relegation

Notable Summer Transfers (FPL Angle)

• Salah leaves Liverpool — the definitive FPL premium mid for the last 8 seasons is no longer in the Premier League. The premium MID slot is wide open
• Elliot Anderson (Nottm Forest → Man City) — £135m transfer, a British record. Instant starter at £6.5m, GW1 xPts 4.05
• Morgan Rogers (Aston Villa → Chelsea) — £117m, second-most expensive British player ever
• Piero Hincapié / Illian Meslier / Christos Tzolis → Arsenal — Tzolis (from Club Brugge) replaces Trossard. Arsenal open with a home tie vs Coventry (FDR 2)
• Man City new manager: Enzo Maresca — a striker-centric system that should boost Haaland's chances further

Haaland at record £15.5m — buy or not?

Haaland is priced at £15.5m — the highest ever in FPL, up from his £15.0m peak in 2024/25. He scored 239 points last season (his second-best) and tops our ml-xgb-v2 GW1 xPts leaderboard at 5.95 pt.

With Salah gone, the "Haaland or Salah" dilemma is over — Haaland is effectively mandatory. Over 75% of managers own him already.

Chip Strategy (2026-27 Rules)

FPL 2026-27 continues the two-set chip system:

• 4 chips: Wildcard / Free Hit / Triple Captain / Bench Boost (Assistant Manager is discontinued)
• Each set must be used by the GW19 deadline (Sat 2 Jan 2027, 13:30 GMT). No rollover
• Up to 5 free transfers can be banked

Suggested strategy: don't hoard your first-half Bench Boost for DGW26 — play it around GW9-14 when the first DGW arrives (historically the highest EV). With no AFCON this year, most early Wildcards are being played around GW6-8.
